Low Taper vs Taper
One is a specific placement, the other is the whole family, and they get used as if they were the same request.
Fade
Low Taper
A taper is not a fade. It only shortens the hairline itself — around the ears and down the neck — and leaves the sides alone. Quiet, professional, and the easiest cut in this list to live with.

Taper
The oldest instruction in barbering: shorten gradually towards the neckline, leave everything else. Works on every head in this list and never looks like you are trying.

Taper on its own is the classic barbering term: a gradual shortening at the sideburn and nape, with the length above it left alone. Low taper specifies where the graduation begins — low on the head, close to the ear. In practice the two cuts are near identical; the difference is that low taper is the modern name and tends to be asked for alongside a longer top, while a plain taper is usually part of a fuller classic cut with a side part or a comb-over.

Pick on upkeep, not on the photo.
Choose the low taper
You are wearing length on top and want the sides to disappear cleanly under it.
Choose the taper
You want a traditional short back and sides where the whole cut is proportioned together, not a top section sitting on shorter sides.
Either term gets you close. What actually decides the outcome is telling them what is happening on top — the sides get cut to match it.
The words for each.
For a low taper
- Ask for a low taper and be clear you want the sides left, not faded.
- Say whether you want the neckline blocked square or tapered natural.
- A taper suits fine hair better than a fade — say so if yours is fine.
For a taper
- Ask for a taper and say how much you want off the top separately.
- Specify the neckline: blocked, rounded, or tapered natural.
- Say tidy the sideburns and give the length you want them at.
