Low Fade vs Mid Fade

The words describe the same cut at two different heights, and nobody agrees on where the boundary sits.

Fade

Low Fade

Guard 1 · 25-35m · back in 2-3 wks

The gradient starts just above the ear and stays low around the head. The most forgiving fade there is — it works with almost any top and almost any face, which is why it is the default ask in most shops.

Mid Fade

Guard 0-1 · 30-40m · back in 2-3 wks

The gradient begins around the temple, halfway between a low and a high fade. It gives more contrast than a low fade without the severity of a high one, and it is the safest place to start if you have never had a fade.

The difference

What actually separates them.

Low and mid refer to where the highest point of the blend lands. A low fade tops out around the temple line, just above the ear — the gradient sits below the widest part of your head and reads as subtle from the front. A mid fade carries it up to the temple itself, so the short section is visible head-on. The low fade holds at guard 1; the mid runs 0 to 1 because there is more distance to travel.

Which one

Pick on upkeep, not on the photo.

Choose the low fade

You want the cut to read conservative from the front, or your work is somewhere a visible skin section would be noticed.

Choose the mid fade

You want contrast between the top and the sides. The mid is the middle setting for a reason — it is the default most barbers reach for when you say fade with no qualifier.

Point at your own head. Say where you want the shortest part to stop climbing. That beats the word every time.

What to say

The words for each.

For a low fade

  1. Ask for a low fade starting an inch above the ear.
  2. Say whether you want it taken to skin or left at a one.
  3. Confirm the top length in fingers or inches, not adjectives.

For a mid fade

  1. Ask for a mid fade starting at the temple.
  2. Say how much contrast you want — a skin fade is loud, a one is quiet.
  3. Mention if your hairline is receding; a good barber will drop the start point.
